The Culper Ring Spies
A soldier gives a shout and the gallows floor drops, ending the short life of Patriot soldier and spy, Nathan Hale. Hale, at just 21 years old, was the first American patriot executed as a spy on September 22, 1776. He had been captured by the notorious General Howe and his men, and summarily executed without trial in front of the Dove Tavern, in New York City. Under orders from General George Washington upon hearing of Hale’s execution, Benjamin Tallmadge formed the Culper Ring, a New York based patriot spy ring. The Culper Ring used a coded system, replacing words with numbers, in order to send secret messages undetected behind enemy lines. Before Nathan Hale was caught, he worried about the success of his mission, and hid a box in the event of his demise that contained vital information for General Washington. It now falls to you to find both the codebook, and Nathan Hale’s final clues in order to help General Washington thwart the British. Hint: Remember you need to know where you are going before you figure out what you’re looking for.
